BMW Concept X5 eDrive

The BMW Concept X5 eDrive is the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) from BMW to combine the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive with an innovative BMW plug-in hybrid system. This combination ensures that the BMW Concept X5 eDrive stands not only for brand-typical sportiness and a luxurious ambience, but also efficiency and environmental-friendliness.

The vehicle impresses with customary outstanding driving dynamics, yet produces 0% local emissions in the purely electric mode. This not only makes the concept study the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class, but also represents another step towards ground-breaking efficiency in the SAV segment.


The design of the vehicle is systematically geared to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. In particular the aerodynamically optimized front bumper and the underbody impress with innovative features that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption, thus boosting efficiency and dynamics.

Air Curtain.

The integrated Air Curtain channels air through two vertical inlets and along the front wheel arches. The accelerated air flow creates a kind of “curtain” on the outer side of the wheels.

Air Breather.

The Air Breather channels the air flow at the front wheels. This innovative technology reduces turbulence and air resistance, which, in turn, reduces fuel consumption.

Air Blades

The rear spoiler at the roof edge and the Air Blades joined to it at the side combine to form a highly efficient so-called “trailing edge”.The precisely defined air flow at the rear minimizes disruptive air swirl and the braking effect of negative pressure.

Charging Concept

The plug-in hybrid vehicle can be recharged easily and quickly at home using any household power outlet, the BMW i Charging Station or, when you’re out and about, at a public charging station.

* The BMW Concept X5 eDrive is a concept vehicle that is not available for sale. A general operating permit is not yet available for the subsequent series-production version of a BMW Concept X5 eDrive. Consumption values are not yet known.
